The Death Call!
George receives the call from Death-center (A special
department from Government that tells you that you will die today – Not giving
you details though) a little after midnight on February 15, 2016. Just one day
after his Birthday. At first, George wants to spend the day away in his
bedroom, where loneliness may protect him from the undesirable and painful
death to come, but because it is his last day alive, he pushes himself to try
and make the most of his final 24 hours. He downloads the app MyLastFriend,
which pairs “Dying” with other people—either Dying or non- Dying —who are
looking for companionship on their Final Day. Through MyLastFriend, George
meets Santiago, another Dying who got the call from Death-center while he was
in the middle of beating up Charlie Stevenson, the current boyfriend of
Santiago’s ex-girlfriend, Stacy. After the assault on Charlie, Santiago is on
the run from the police and cannot spend his Final Day with his best friends,
Spier Simon and Max Torres. George and Santiago make plans to meet. George
insists that Santiago pick him up at his apartment.
At 4:30 a.m., Santiago arrives at George’s apartment. They
begin their day with a visit to George’s father in the hospital. After they see
George’s best friend, Jessica Suarez, they visit a Make-A-Memory virtual
reality station to go scuba diving. Finally, they visit George’s mother in
Middleton Cemetery. George sees that, alongside his mother’s grave, there is
another grave being dug for George (him). George kneels beside his mother’s tombstone
and tells her that he will be joining her soon. The more time George and
Santiago spends together, the bolder George becomes and the deeper their
friendship grows—there is an intense connection forming between them. Before
leaving the cemetery, George and Santiago chat about the afterlife while
sitting inside George’s freshly dug grave.
At 13:22 p.m., it is about halfway through George and
Santiago’s End Day. George wants to visit the World Desire Location Reality,
which is a fake trip-to-wherever-you-want-to-go-in the-world attraction; on the
way there, they stop at a pier along the Colorado River, where Santiago
contemplates the deaths of his parents and little brother. George hops on the
back of Santiago’s bike, and together they ride to a nearby park. George and
Santiago meet up with Jessica again at the World Desire Location Reality, where
the group selects the virtual reality experience to tour the world in 90
minutes. They travel to Australia, Iraq, Colombia, Egypt, China, and Chile,
George’s family’s country of origin. Afterward, Santiago and Jessica head to
Momentum, a club for Dying. Santiago posts a picture from the bar. Charlie, who
wants revenge after Santiago assaulted him, sees the picture and heads to
Momentum with a loaded gun.
At 6:14 p.m., George and Santiago perform a karaoke version of
“Tomorrow” by James Hersey at Momentum, and everyone in the audience is moved
by their performance. When the song ends, George works up the courage to kiss
Santiago.
Spier Simon and Max Torres arrive at Momentum to say their
final goodbyes to Santiago when Charlie and his gang show up. Charlie goes to
shoot Santiago, but commotion ensues, and George and Santiago manage to flee
the club. George and Santiago retreat to George’s apartment, where they lie in bed
and profess their love for one another—both wish they had met each other
sooner. They fall asleep on George’s bed, and George wakes up from the nap
before Santiago to make tea. When he goes to ignite the gas burner on the
stove, the apartment erupts into flames. George is killed instantly, and
Santiago wakes up moments later, dazed in the smoke. Santiago is devastated by
George’s death. After Santiago says his goodbyes to George’s corpse. Then,
Santiago noticed a voice mail from George, where he thanks him for being his
last friend and love. However, Santiago did not see the car coming when
crossing the street as he listened to George’s voice.
Santiago now sees George. Where? Where it feels nice to be
loved for the first time. Next to someone special...
I really love this story
